Re: Choice of tube equiptment to power Quad '57s?

Posted by Vinylly on August 8, 2000 at 08:02:06:

I've used several tube amps. with my Quad ESL 57's. I've had the McIntosh 240 for quite a few years. I felt it was too sweet, noisy, and laid back (I bought it used and actually traded it off for about twice what I paid for it, -somebody must really like them). I then got a used pair of VTL Compact mono-block 100's (which I traded the McIntosh for), -much more life, vitallity and presence then the McIntosh. I got scared out by the 100 watts, so following the advise of the Quad Doctor, I bought the VTL TT25's. Their doing great in triode mode with 25 watts. However, I heard that OTL amps. do ecceptionally well with Quad 57's. You could be looking at AtmoShere OTL's, or the Transcendent Stereo OTL (which was actually made for the 57's)
