Pin 1 of metal envelope Octal tubes connects to the metal envelope. Connect pin 1 of the socket to chassis. The metal envelope is the shield!
BTW, quite a few glass envelope Octals that have a metal ring on the base (for instance KT88) connect the ring to pin 1. Unless, like the 6SN7, pin 1 of an Octal is explicitly connected to an active electrode, tying pin 1 of the socket to the chassis is (IMO) a very reasonable action.
