RE: Any Current Production 12xx7 Tubes Worth Buying Yet?

Posted by Mendel on March 28, 2017 at 07:48:06:

In my opinion, NO.
The are some decent premium ones like the Psvanes and treasures, but they cost over $100 for a pair. You can easily pick up good NOS tubes for that. There are still lots of high quality NOS small signal tubes available for reasonable prices (under $100 per pair). Just search the classifieds on this site, Canuck Audio Mart, US Audio Mart, Audiogon and of course E-bay (although deals on E-bay have become much more rare than previously).
If you want to make a real score, you have to do a little more work. Check local classifieds like Craigs List or Kijiji. Stop in on old electronic stores or TV repair places. But the ultimate source still remains Hamfests. Go early, ask about tubes. Make contacts and follow up. These guys generally are not audiophiles and to them a tube is a tube (as long as it works). Don't haggle, pay the (usually low) asking prices. Build relationships and you will have excellent tube sources. Way better than paying full pop to internet tube dealers.
Enjoy the roll!
