Tube warm up?

I have a McCormack amp that sounds it's best when left on all the time and after having been played for a good hour. I take it that this is not always the case w/ solid state. How is it w/ tube stuff? I have a tubed preamp and can detect no difference w/ long playing. Am I deaf or are preamps less suseptible to this kind of thing?
