ARC D76 possibilities

Posted by Chris Spafford on November 5, 2002 at 17:35:46:

Hello; I have an Audio Research D76 with the more rare configuration of all point-to-point wiring (NO PCB) and all non-inductive wirewound resistors. I use black plate Tung Sols; copper base Tesla Vrsovice KT88s are nice too; with a plate voltage of 585 VDC, not many other 6550s (except GE-- good tube but doesn't sound good in the D76) can last long. The screens and front end are regulated by a 5th 6550; the screens run at 300 VDC. I love Tung Sols, but I had a interesting thought; this amp would be a PERFECT candidate for conversion to using 807/5933 type output tubes. I can source the anode caps, and I always liked the way 807s sounded in the Altec 256C. I'm considering the 3D21 as well. The 807 would have the advantage that I could get top-notch late 1940s examples for about five bucks, and they would be of equal or better quality than any Tung Sol or M-O Valve type ever made. Any feedback on this would be appreciated, as well as other tube #s that would work. Also, who has 3D21s? Thanks, Chris
