Maybe they couldn't hear the difference given the overall system these amps had to operate in--in other words, there were probably weaker links in the chain due to the technology of the day, and it didn't make sense to spend the extra money in the minds of even those who may have believed it would theoretically be beneficial to buy more capacitance. Just a guess.
Drummerwillwr, FWIW, I say if you can hear it, it's probably real, especially if it's dramatic. While I haven't worked with an amp like the one you describe yet, the values involved tell my intuition that there will be a difference, and possibly a big one depending on the current demands those PSU output caps would see during dynamic peaks. The point of diminishing returns probably begins where ripple reduction ends. It sounds like you already know enough to not exceed the capabilities of a rectifier tube. I don't remember now if you said what kind of cap the new one is. The poly-in-oil motor-runs are an amazing step forward from any electrolytics I've tried. Highly recommended if you haven't tried them already.
