RE: What is it?

Posted by JKT on June 17, 2024 at 08:40:46:

It's a reimagining of an Eico HF-89 amp. Twenty years ago I bought an Eico HF-89 on Ebay. It was my first project and I crammed in as many "upgrades" as I could fit in it. My big PPP class A KT-120 mono-blocks generate way too much heat for the summer (and retubing has got more expensive); so, got to thinking about all the 6550s and KT-88s I have in storage. A few years back I upgraded a Jolida amp for a guy who talked me into it and really was impressed with the result. Was surprised at how good a class AB1 amp could sound. The Jolida uses a circuit topology very similar to the Eico. That got me thinking about the old Eico. Unfortunately there isn't enough room under the hood for the changes needed. So, a clean slate design. The picture is the result.
