RE: suck it and see

Hi Ray,

May I have your private email, so I can send you all of Swenson and JLHs posts on power supplies of this kind.

Henry may poo-poo Dennis and I as he sees fit, but it was Dennis in 1989, with his Serious Stereo 2A3 amp (best sound in show - RMAF 2005) who developed this entire approach, and it was I who took a lot of crap, but was the bearer of this news to you Members on this Forum.

Henry has his place on this Forum, since he made a BEAUTIFUL and VERY important contribution, with his Flywhheel approach. But the basic original idea of low storage, etc. is solely Dennis Fraker's.

The current trend today is to use Henry's excellent Flywheel, C-56U, and 15 to 20 uF after it, as the start of the filter. After that, the GENERAL idea of Dennis' Low Stored Energy Supply (LSES) applies. This combination defines a modern power supply for DHT finals.

After the C-56U, others use TWO more L/Cs, typically cheapo C-40Xs and 45 to 50 uF. I personally find that I prefer only TWO L/Cs TOTAL in the filter chain to the DHT finals, as oppossed to THREE L/Cs, because it sounds SLIGHTLY more immediate, and better to my ear. Not a big deal, three L/Cs will get people MILES ahead of conventional supplies.

To use two L/Cs means the second choke can not be a cheapo ten dollar Triad C-40X. I custom-designed 7 Ohm 2.2 HY inductors to fufill my L2 need, with small cores and special lead out wires, the entire unit weighs under two pounds.

From your parts and value selection, I can see that you have a "partial grasp" of this supply approach. Me sending you JLH and Swenson's power supply compilation - which is in cronological order, AND, you doing STEP TESTs, in PSUD, will really allow you to hone-in on your results.

Cheers to all,

Jeff Medwin
