teac 4010sl vs 4010gsl
Posted by vinnie2 on December 28, 2015 at 05:57:21:
Hello folks
Wandered over from Tubes(diy) to seek some advice. I have a teac 4010gsl which plays back pre-recorded tapes just fine; trouble is I can't get it to record. I went through it and cleaned it and lubed it and replaced the belts. No help for recording.
After checking here awhile back, I gave up on the idea of trying to go through the lower half electronics as being to problematic. Then this morning I found a 4010sl on craigslist about an hour from me for $30. I called the guy and he bought it used and doesn't know if it was recording or not when he bought it.
I was thinking of buying it and swapping out the lower half to see if it would work and also having the rest of it around for spare parts. I am wondering though if they would be compatible? The info I can find leads me to believe the main differences would be different heads and a pause record button instead of the 1/2 1 mil button on the sl.
Do any of you know if the swap would work? The other questions is about the durability of the components, ie is it likely my gsl doesn't record because of old caps, etc, and the sl would likely have the same problem? Don't need two of them that won't record, especially since I don't think the sl heads will work in the gsl.
Thanks for any help you can offer.
