In the study I mentioned below by Ashihara Kaoru and Kiryu Shogo, AES Convention Paper 5401, it was found that when audible test tones and ultrasonic frequencies were sent through the same speakers, measurable intermodulation effects were produced in the audible range and everybody could hear the differences in DBTs. When the audible frequencies and the ultrasonic frequencies were sent through different speakers, they could not intermodulate, and in the DBTs no one could then detect whether the ultrasonics were present or not.

Therefore, there is a very plausible conventional measurable explanation for the differences actually heard which does not require that people hear ultrasonic frequencies.
