Carver 4000t Pre-Amp Fix Requested -- HELP!

Posted by Theswits on December 16, 2005 at 08:34:35:

Hi all,
Just getting started assembling my "first" system, and decided to use a Carver 4000t (picked up one I thought was in decent condition on Ebay) because of it's flexibility and to figure out what kind of "sound" I like (I'm hooked up to Thiel CS2.2's and a Carver Pro ZR1600).

Anywho, at low listening levels, the bass and lower midrange disappear, so I tried using the "loudness" circuit on the 4000t, which I thought would boost the low end to compensate. The circuit did NOTHING!

So, I took the cover off my 4000t, and at the bottom of the circuit borad that the "loudness" button is attached to, is a resistor that looks like it was snipped off at one end and lifted .... Nothing that looks like smoked transistors or caps, so I now have a few questions for folks on this board:
1) Does the Carver 4000t "loudness" circuit do ANYTHING?
2) Can anyone send me a PDF of the schematic or manual (I got neither with the unit)?
3) For that matter, I don't notice a difference on my high pass button either, does it do anything? (maybe my ears are shot, lol...)
4) Should I be considering any tweaks to this unit? Inside, it looks stock-as-a-rock.
5) The rest of the buttons/controls seem to have an effect, although some of them I can't yet describe what exactly that effect is.
6) Can anyone describe how the correlator "automatic" button chooses its level versus the manual control?

Thanks in advance, sorry about the long thread.
Cheers, E.
