If you want bass roll-off under 50-55Hz. then you have to buy speakers with sealed enclosures

People who buy expensive large speakers want more bass than that -- although they could always plug their bass port for a more gradual roll-off.
Most sealed enclosure two-way speakers have the smooth bass roll off (12dB/octave) you prefer.
I haven't been reading Stereophile regularly in the past two years -- you sure pointed out two good examples of bass peaks that can't be explained solely by a microphone proximity effect.
Maybe a new trend.
Not good.
