In my opinion, if your room is 8 feet by 10 feet (or less), you would be probably be better off with headphones. The best ones for the diehard loudspeaker lover would be the AKG K-1000 "earspeakers", simply because they sound more like loudspeakers than any other type of headphone. You can even team them with a subwoofer later on if you'd like. They are available on the used market for about $500, if you look around...
