Speaker for a tube stereo playing rock (Axiom vs Quad)
Posted by xxmartinxx@aol.com on May 19, 2004 at 16:50:54:
I've been using Axiom 3Mtis with my EICO ST40 tube stereo for about a year now. They sound great, but they lack a little in the bass sometimes and they highs (especially cymbals) can be a bit hissy.
So I bought a used pair of Quad 12Ls. I had heard them in a local higher end stereo shop locally and thought they were much better than the B&W offerings. So I plug them in and am first struck by the bigness of the bass and that they were a bit more efficient than my Axioms. But as I listened more, I noticed that even though the highs were smoother and less hissy, they were also much less predominate. The Quads also seem a little flat.
So I'm looking for suggestions for speakers that are around $400-500 new or used that will work well with a tube stereo for mostly rock.
