The amp had a new set of NOS tubes, definitely not the Amperex, and the tone control bypassed. It was also driving a less efficient set of speakers than your Tannoys.
Your combination must have been the key. I'm also hunting for an EICO HF-81, but if an AF4 comes my way...I may just grab it this time and match it with efficient speakers! Thanks for the tip.
