Our family had a small homemade boat. The only motor we had was a joknson 25. As long as we loaded it heavy towards the bow we had many great outings on sheltered water.
The look on my fathers face was priceless when he set out empty, gunned it and made a hard turn. He made a "hole" in the water and sank, transom first, 50' from the dock!! We continued to enjoy that boat for years AND we finally knew it's limitations. If you can do it in a safe manner, find shallow water and test it's limitations. 3 hp. over is probably well within a safe range.
