These terms describe the same thing. Self contained engine mounted on transom is an outboard. Sterndrive is an inboard engine with an outdrive that looks like the bottom of a outboat motor, the outdirve turns to steer. Inboard engine or v-drive have inboard engine that has a shaft that goes through hull to prop, rudder is separate to the prop shaft, prop does not steer.
