If you are into Motors for performance ie:hopping them up and soforth, Mercury has a slight edge for durability. If you just want a good serviceable unit. It is a toss up. Evenrude is generally a bit cheaper on inital purchase price. I donot like any new 4 strokes. They weigh a lot more than a comparable 2 stroke and are somewhat slower.I assume you are talking about a new unit. Just my opin., TG
