Small Boat News -- Bolger Redesigns "Chebacco"...
Posted by Thom V on February 6, 2005 at 13:13:40:
Somewhere around 1997 Brad Story of Story Shipyard (once Essex Shipyard owned by Brad’s ancestors) had designer Phill Bolger work up a light, trailerable daysailer with a small cuddy using the cold mold construction technique. The design was named the Chebacco after the keel cat schooners found in the parish of Chebacco around 1800 and now the township of Essex Massachusetts.
Brad built the cold molded version but found construction labor intensive and expensive so a revision was drawn up for sheet plywood. This Chebacco version caught on world wide as more amateur builders took on the build-out of these fine small craft. A further development occurred with the addition of a lapstrake round sided version – even a ‘pilot house’ version was drawn up! Recently Phil Bolger and Friends re-visited the design and have drawn up this latest incarnation taking the time to rethink the cuddy, reposition the main mast forward (eliminates the constant lee rudder when the sail cut was not done properly) and rework the stepping of the main mast after the trailer ride to a one man operation. A walk through cuddy top -- a version of the Bolger bird watcher idea -- allows the mast to be walked into position. The cockpit seats still work as tent berths. Bolger has added a head, two berths in the cuddy instead of just a flat floor, and many storage lockers including dedicated stern space for two 3 gallon gas tanks for the outboard.
