I've checked out several of LWR's recommendations and all have been great. Nothing wrong with recommending good material in your area or from friends.
I've recommended friends of mine from Tempe, The Elliots, over the years because they are talented and make great music. The only thing I get is the satisfaction of turning people on to great music they might not otherwise hear. I don't know why anyone would object to that.
Besides, most musicians now have websites with samples of their music. You can check it out and if you don't like it, don't buy.
