Rabbit Ears.....

Posted by Todd Krieger on December 26, 2006 at 14:21:32:

This was *not* intended to demean you. It was to merely point out a difference of opinion to someone. Expressly to point out that some people actually have a low opinion of Neil Peart, in this case. Nothing more than that. Once an acknowledgment of disagreement is established, I have no problem whatsoever with your strong dislike for Peart. Or any other opinion regarding music.

Someone here thinks Bernard Adelstein (former Cleveland Orchestra trumpeter) is a lousy trumpeter. Some here think George Szell was a vastly overrated conductor. Someone here thinks Miles Davis is vastly overrated. Some here think John Coltrane is overrated. Someone here likened Aleks Syntek to Madonna. Some here think the Eagles are an awful band. Someone here thinks Kurt Elling is an outstanding singer. Someone here thinks Kenny G. is a top-class jazz musician. Some here think Celine Dion is worse than Barbra Streisand. Someone here once thought my opinions on Anton Bruckner were whacked. Someone here thinks progressive bands in general are trash. Some people here think rock music is an inferior form of music. Some people think classical music is antiquated to where it should be forgotten. Someone here thinks Beck (not Jeff Beck) is a brilliant songwriter.

All those opinions I've voiced disagreement over, but then moved on.

Note I'm not even trying to counter your latest opinion, because I've already acknowledged your difference before.

What people state here becomes public record, and open for reference. (Until this site were to shut down, hopefully never.)

My posts here are referenced all the time. Even outside this website. And some of it was intended to demean. But I ignore it. Simply because doing otherwise only calls attention to it. Often creating far more grief (like the responses aside from this one) than what was contained in the referencing post. (I've made this very mistake as well.)

So in essence, my attempt to rationalize my reaction to a facetious post ends up in an unexpected confrontation between people other than myself or who I responded to. Unfortunate.

I think people's paranoia goes overboard whenever their rabbit ears sense anything referenced to them, and then taken as a personal insult, where in fact there often is none. Along with that, in the public record, one has to be comfortable with what he states. To where intent to demean, let alone the intent to reference, is best left alone. Otherwise he'll perceive the inevitable reference as a recurring nightmare of embarrassment. And then the overreaction transforms the perception into hard reality.
