Back then a lot of the venues available to what was quite a small market were the back halls of pubs. The first place I saw Pink Floyd was a pub hall, and Traffic when they started again as a 3 piece after Mason left.
Actually I would guess I saw more bands in pubs than anywhere... apart from the student union gigs but they tended to be one step up the ladder. Finish a set and the band would come off the front of the stage and go to the bar. Very friendly.
