Moby Grape prepares for January show

Moby Grape, long-out-of-action '60s San Francisco rock band, has reformed in the wake of an appeals court ruling that returned the band's name to the musicians. Members were rehearsing last week at Open Space Studios in San Jose, with an eye toward a performance in January at the Fillmore Auditorium.

Omar Spence, the 38-year-old son of founding member Skip Spence, who died of lung cancer in 1999, will take his father's place in the lineup, which includes guitarists Peter Lewis and Jerry Miller, bassist Bob Mosley and drummer Don Stevenson. The reformed edition will also feature drummer Aynsley Dunbar, who has played with Jefferson Starship, Frank Zappa and Journey, and keyboardist Pete Sears, also from Jefferson Starship. Airplane/Starship manager Bill Thompson is behind the scenes on the reunion.

The members of Moby Grape finally prevailed in the California Court of Appeals over the band's original manager, who maintained ownership and control over the band's name and all other rights and revenues in a dispute that stretched over three decades. Grape recorded four albums for Columbia Records beginning with the classic 1967 debut, in addition to subsequent reunion albums in the '70s and early '80s.

Neil Young and Stephen Stills of Buffalo Springfield were early admirers and the Doobie Brothers modeled their band after Moby Grape. "More Oar," a 1999 tribute album to Skip Spence's little-known solo album "Oar," featured contributions from R.E.M., Robert Plant, Tom Waits and Beck. -- Joel Selvin
