CSN and CSN Y

Do you think CSN would have had more succes or a longer creative period if they had never welcomed Neil Young into the trio? From what I've read about these guys, Stills and Young had clashed all the way back to their Buff Springfield days. And then add another huge ego (Crosby's) and all the blow those guys did - it seems like a clear recipie for an implosion. CSN and CSNY wrote a lot of great music but their output is no where near as prodigous as Young's. Even if you think that a quarter (a third?) of Neil's solo work is shit, he still has a substanially bigger catalog than CSN. Did CSNY (and perhaps CSN too) ultimately disintegrate due to too chiefs and not enough indians, so to speak?
