Air Supply, "Even The Nights Are Better"

Posted by Luminator on May 23, 2017 at 23:42:23:

During the summer of 1982, almost 35 years ago, my friends and neighbors loved Air Supply's "Even The Nights Are Better." Problem was, despite not being able to play baseball or football in the dark, we loved the nighttime. So to imply that nights were somehow subpar was insulting and just plain wrong.

For me, that summer of '82 was the one between elementary school and junior high. Thus, "Even The Nights Are Better" is associated with the end of elementary school, and has nothing to do with middle school. Concomitantly, Bay Area radio stations just...stopped playing it all together. They never stopped playing the overwrought "Making Love Out Of Nothing At All," but refused to play "Even The Nights Are Better."

Fast forward to the Fall 1990 quarter, while I was a college sophomore. When my dorm neighbors took a shower, it was usually during that morning rush. I took mine at night, which was also when hardly anyone used the bathroom. Well, one warm October evening, I sauntered in, to take my shower. But then I noticed someone was in one of the three stalls. And a soft voice was introvertedly singing Air Supply's "Lost In Love." That was the voice of the physically mousy, and kind of reclusive, Shawna.

As I took the other stall (no one used the middle stall, which had nowhere to place your towel or belongings), I said something like, "Aw c'mon girl, you gotta let it out. Belt that sucker at the top of your lungs!"

I have a gnarly voice, so Shawna instantly recognized me, even though, obviously, she couldn't see through the partitions or curtain.

I then told her that my favorite Air Supply song was "Even The Nights Are Better."

"Hmmm, how does that go?" she said through the shampoo suds flowing from her head to the floor.

I sang a few bars, and Shawna said, "I think I know that one."

Soon, Shawna and I had a blast, singing "Even The Nights Are Better" over and through the empty/unused middle shower stall. We highly doubt anyone else entered the bathroom, while we were singing. 'Cuz if someone had, he or she would have said something to us.

Sigh, no, we audiophiles never did anything as fun as that. But thankfully, internet and satellite radio stations do play the uplifting "Even The Nights Are Better." Because audio products are voiced to placate SAs, 90% of high-end audio products f--- it up, and are just unlistenable. But if you possess one of the 10% which gets out of the music's way, "Even The Nights Are Better" will take you to new heights.
