XTC, "The Ballad Of Peter Pumpkinhead"
Posted by Luminator on May 12, 2017 at 23:26:38:
Today, I had an all-day government accounting class. During lunch, one of the attendees, perhaps from the City of Palo Alto, was listening to XTC's 1992 album, Nonsuch on her phone. The leadoff track, "The Ballad Of Peter Pumpkinhead," brought me back almost 25 years.
In September 1992, thee housemates and I moved into the third and top floor of a college apartment (actual building pictured above). We cobbled together a Sony/Adcom/AQ/Pinnacle stereo, which may have been the only high-end audio products in the complex. Word got out, and as we befriended our neighbors on the ground and second floors, a total of 8 girls, 2 from the ground floor unit wanted to come over, and use the stereo, to hear their music.
One, Nicole, had XTC's Nonsuch, and "The Ballad Of Peter Pumpkinhead" was her favorite. In fact, she once played her harmonica along this song. As such, the song represented the promise of a very, very good school year [which it did turn out to be].
Now, if I told you that I heard "The Ballad Of Peter Pumpkinhead" on the radio, I'd be lying. If I told you that I saw music videos of the song, I'd be lying. If I told you I heard this in restaurants, clubs, or stores, I'd be lying. Only in modern days, on Sirius and internet radio, and no more than 4 times, have I heard "The Ballad Of Peter Pumpkinhead." So, if I culled anything from today's class, it was nice to know that someone has Nonsuch, and ostensibly likes "The Ballad Of Peter Pumpkinhead."
Hopefully, you've heard this. And if not, well, that's why we post here.
