Simply Red, "The Right Thing"

A few years ago, I briefly mentioned Simply Red's "The Right Thing." Despite the flourish of 80s radio stations, this is one track which still does not get much airplay.
Anyway, here in San Francisco, the Spring '87 semester was marked by sunny and hot weather. Coupled with some really boring classes, we had a hard time staying awake and concentrating. One of the songs which woke and picked us up was the blue-eyed soul of "The Right Thing."
Perhaps because the recording is a punchy, hard-to-penetrate wall of sound, "The Right Thing" is conducive to having a dozen of your friends get together in thigh quarters, and get into a bump-n-grind. Or flail-n-whack. One fine early June 1987 day, Andy, my friend and classmate, took me to another friend's house. Didn't mater that we weren't the popular kids. Didn't matter that we weren't stylish and good-looking. Didn't matter that we didn't have god-like or goddess-like bodies. Didn't matter if we were gay or straight. Didn't matter from which economic background we hailed. Didn't matter what anyone's ethnic makeup was. Didn't matter which grade you were in. Simply Red's "The Right Thing" had us nudgin', grindin', slappin', hip-checkin', and elbowin' each other, each of us sporting wide and silly grins. For a brief moment, we forgot about finals, forgot about the impending dispersal which was summer.
Indeed, "The Right Thing" is great for us audiophiles, who often don't have large numbers. It's about chucking our stuffy notions, and just having fun.
