It is based (knowingly or unknowingly) on the principles articulated by McDonald and others in the late '50s (IRE Trans Aud, May-Jun 1957).

I really can't say how much the Hawksford circuit owes to McDonald (other than, perhaps, general principles). I believe the contest is between Hawksford and Baxendall. See:
