If the guys who make these DACs actually "believe that the measurable distortion from their approach isn't audible but that the pre/post ringning from the other approach very much is", then they would tell you that these DACs measure BETTER than the other approach.

You can measure all sorts of things, the argument in this case seems to be which particular measurements are of audible importance. It appears from what you've said that these DACs measure better in certain areas and worse in others.

So of course maybe your point is that some designers have differing opinions on the importance of specific measurements. Which is not exactly news.
