The last straw came when....

If I had given any credence to the golden ears theory of audiophiledom, it breathed its last gasp at the WQXR auditorium in The New York Times Building in 1983 during an NY Audio Labs demo comparing their OTL amplifiers with McIntosh 3000s. Midway through the demo, they apologized, shut the equipment off, and reversed one of the channels on the NYAL amplifiers having gotten the left and right channels reversed with respect to the McIntosh amplifiers. Of more than 100 industry insiders mostly members of AES in that room, not one of them noticed it for a good 20 minutes or so. So much for golden ears.
