Easy Minlogon (with or without disabling WFP)

Posted by seger on December 6, 2008 at 06:37:17:

It's fun to do this without disabling WFP, but in practice I've found it easier to disable WFP - reason being you save time by not having to use safe mode each time you come in and out of minlogon - software installs, soundcard driver updates are best done from normal XP desktop, out of minlogon.

Easy Minlogon

1.Download this minlogon.cab file
You must have WinRAR or WinZip or similar extraction tool installed.
Right-click the minlogon.cab file and choose "Extract to minlogon/"
The minlogon.exe file is in the minlogon folder that appears.

2. Make a new text document and copy the following into it:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
"Config"=dword:00000017

Save it as minlogon.reg to the desktop or another convenient directory (folder)

3. Do either a. or b.:
a. Without disabling WFP: Restart and repeatedly press F8 when booting to enter Safe Mode
b. Disable WFP: 2. Download xplite Launch it, select the Windows File Protection tab, click Disabled, and Apply.

4. In C:\WINDOWS\system32 rename winlogon.exe to winlogon.exe.bak
Copy the minlogon.exe into system32 folder and rename to winlogon.exe

5. Double-click minlogon.reg to create the new dword called Config with value 00000017 which allows minlogon to work.
Restart and you have implemented minlogon.
