Not lossy. The compression you reference is for packaging, similar to a zip file. Decoded lossless (ALAC or FLAC) is identical to uncompressed formats. Some people claim to hear a difference, others don't. Have you tried comparing the two? (BTW, if you're using iTunes look in to AIFF which is also uncompressed, supports tags, and is 'bit-perfect').
