Why would you care if a Mac Mini is 'on all the time' vs. a RPi that is 'on all the time'.....

It's probably possible, but I have not done it...... Why don't you try it and report back to us. You can do this with 1 Rpi... But the audiophiles will tell you that they can hear bad things when you do this. But, at least you'll know it will work before you order another Rpi.

I think you are headed in the direction of a NAS now...... Why don't you investigate a NAS. Lots of features and much faster than USB disk storage..

I have one at home, and can access my storage anywhere in the World with internet....
