Yikes!! IT guys are the worse for setting up good sounding systems. its all bits is bits thinking. Cant blame em as most of their work has no time component. Audio is different.

He still has the server set up but he's looking for ways to improve it's sound and make it more competitive with the cheap DVD player.

Understand my son is a computer network security professional so computer based systems hold no mysteries to him. He started his system thinking he wouldn't want or need CDs but experience has changed that tune. He's starting to make decisions now based on what he hears, not hype, preconceived notions or convenience.


Good for him. With his skills he can build a much better solution if he really is able to ditch his preconceived notions.

Here is a link that will open his eyes and IME produce a better sounding system than a typical server. Hardware is dated on the site a bit, but he could use the GIGABYTE GA-H61M-S2H mobo and an appropriate dual core cpu. No need for a fancy case either.
