For long mike cables we went balanced to diminish noise problems Once we got to the console everything was converted to single ended. Talking about a large Neve console. At audio frequencies and short cable lengths there is no advantage to balanced. More components, more to go wrong. Believe me a Shindo single ended pre is as good or better than any balance pre. Also the balanced stuff cost more money for no real improvement in performance
