Sanderling/Dresden

I have yet to hear the equal of Sanderling's Dresden set on disc (I currently own the Walter, Klemperer and Barenboim sets and have previously owned those by Kempe, Jochum, Karajan, Solti, Previn, Haitink, Bernstein, and others). The mix could be improved somewhat (as the strings sound a tad glassy above the stave) but its no worse than any other recording from that period (early 1970s). It would make a good subject for an SACD re-release, which would fix the string balance. If you can deal with an honest, simply miked accounting of the Brahm's symphonies though, this set has much to recommend it. I am totally sold on the lush acoustic of the Lukaskirche and the unmatched playing of the Staatskapelle. The BMG/Eurodisc three disc set is also budget priced; self-recommending.
