A long, long time ago, in a ....musical instruction, unless you were very lucky had to do strictly with technique. Right up until I went off to college I was still hearing, "Make the 'D' more below the bell". And that was with a big time Orchestra Member instructor.

I wonder if I wouldn't have pushed a little harder if I had a coach like Leyendecker?

Did he even comment on the fluffed high note? He knows the young man will either play it eventually or go sell Bonds, doesn't matter. I imagine that if there were a technique issue that would improve with a tip it would be given without calling attention to a defect.

Now there's not much reason to go into interpretation in Arbans or your Piano Studies book but a lot of solo works and orchestral passages are taught alongside the Etudes. Ask that kid, "what did you work on today?", rather than the question, "how was your lesson", that begs the answer, "Okay".

Does your offspring's teacher teach like Lydecker or my Austrian Ski Instructor, Ignatz, 'Shtem de Ski, Shtem de Ski?
