Okay, I don't know about over the top but these are my favorites (I agree with the poster who said you really have to go with different conductors for each piece r/t complete sets):
Sym. Nos. 1 & 2 - Barenboim/BPO/Teldec
Sym. No. 3 - Bohm/Vienna/Decca; or Szell/Dresden/Orfeo; or Haitink/Vienna/Philips
Sym. No. 4 - Bohm/Vienna/Decca; or Karajan/BPO/EMI; or Klemperer/BRSO/EMI (live); or
Wand/NDR/RCA (live)Sym. No. 5 - Jochum/Concertgebouw/Philips; or Chailly/Concertgebouw/Decca; or
Klemperer/Philharmonia/EMISym. No. 6 - Klemperer/Philharmonia/EMI
Sym. No. 7 - Walter/Columbia/Sony; or Karajan/BPO/EMI; or Wand/BPO/RCA
Sym. No. 8 - Bohm/Vienna/DG; or Karajan/Vienna/DG; or Wand/NDR/RCA (live at Lubeck
Cathedral)Sym. No. 9 - Mehta/Vienna/Decca; or Klemperer/Philharmonia/EMI; or Wand/NDR/RCA (live
at Lubeck)Of the above conductors, probably only Klemperer shortchanges the "mystery" in Bruckner - but he lays bare the structure of the symphonies superbly.
Giulini (Vienna/DG) conducts beautiful, slow and spiritual recordings of the last three but the strings are a bit harsh in climaxes. Furtwangler and Van Beinum are very good in the last three also but the sound is early '50s and limited.
