Schuman Symphonies

I love the Schumann Symphonies when played well. I'm really fond of Kubelik on DG - the Szell is a safe choice (yawn), Bernstein is exciting but the sound isn't great. I like Gardiner for a different flavor. My favorites are 1 and 4.
I'm not keen on Barenboim as a conductor - I hated his Beethoven series - HATED it. I know the Schumann has been well reviewed and might be just dandy... but I doubt it. I'd strongly recommend you go with one of the older performances recommended in this thread first.
