why do they have the feet facing forward ?

..... with the feet facing forward you now have a flat sheet of thick metal plate to smash your big toe into .in addition it looks bad IMHO
they really extend far out also
Had they faced backwards it would have looked better and been safer for the toes
that why I am glad I purchased Mye stands .... its just a much better design from a mechnical engineering standpoint
