I am still making changes to the mod because after the new XO was in place, the high frequency energy was to high in my room. I thought about roomchanges bus just yesterday i decided to try the standard 1,5 ohm resistor that Magnepan uses in the high signalpath. That really made the difference...The high frequency is now some what tamed.
About the crossover differnce:
Let met first say that i have not heard a 1.7i
But my original 1.7 sounded not so good as i had expected, although much more lower energy and depth than the previously owned MG-12's
During the XO change i discovered that on one speaker the treble foil was burned. I might have listented to them since i got them. Don't really know.
My impressions after the tweak with the GR research parts:
Huge improvement overall.
- much more musical detail
- much longer decay
- as 'real' as i ever heard instruments. The 'wood' of the piano is now something i hear.
- you hear a sorts of new sounds. previously hidden under the veil
- vocals: you can now hear the layering of second vocals, where before this was 'one'
- with bad recordings... the show up so some musical enjoyment is also lost... that is a pity you sometimes have with upgrades:-(
This is momentarily as i have just listend to is for about 20 hours, so its nog fully burned in. And then the resistor mod is only evaluated with two albums. So it is not final.
