My Gunned MMG`s

Posted by tominredbank on April 11, 2008 at 18:28:21:

Hi all, I just wanted to give a short review of my Gunned MMG`s. I`ve had them about 4 months now and they are breaking in quite nicely. Admittedly their breakin period reminded me of " The Exorcist" One day smooth and nice , one day horrid and glaring. PG said "shut the door and just burn `em in" He was right. They now sound as smooth as silk, no glare and wonderful. Let me go back some years and tell my story in order to give an accurate assesment. I started with MMG`s .After a short audition I gave `em a quick `n` dirty mod. Elevated, ridgid stands. (to get the vocals off the floor and to a more realistic listening area), Goetz coil , a Kimber cap and all silver wire. I loved them! But bigger is better , right? I bought the 1.6`s when they first came out( `98?)After an ample breakin they just didn`t sound the same. The emotion, involvment was gone. I was running a 150 WPC Plinius at very modest levels. ( In rotation a Music hall CD 25.2 modded cd player, CAL Aria, Mod Squad Prism and Euphonic Technologies players )I tried 4- Monarchy 200 WPC monoblocks w/ 3 different active xovers(even had a single point xover custom made) But it just wasn`t there. I heard of PG`s mod and had to give it a listen. With my amps and CD`s in hand I went to PA. I liked what I heard . Even though his other equip. is miles ahead of mine I had a good idea of what I was getting into. Not to re-hash it all over again but The Gunned mod gives all the attributes of both speakers and then does it one better. Room filling ,ACCURATE ,deep bass, imaging to die for, PRAT even my MMG`s didn`t have and a beautiful package to boot.I`ve listened to songs I`ve heard a hundred times and hear more detail than ever before. 40+ years ago my dad brought home a 10 WPC Lafayette tube amp, Garrard turntable and a pair of Criterion 2 -way 6" speakers. Me and my 2 older brother were blown away. I was hooked from that point on. The only trouble was the more I upgraded the more I listened to the equipment and not the music. I critiqued the system instead of enjoying the songs. PG`s mod brings back that enjoyment. I don`t know anything about measurements, electronic circuits, graphs or sine waves. I don`t even know what he`s got in those cute little xover boxes.(I`m a welder for the NJ Turnpike for Christ`s sake) But I do know the system as I have it now makes me feel like I did decades ago when my dad wanted to introduce his 3 boys to the joys of music.
