The "flag-waving, constantly intoning "America is great!" brand of patriotism" isn't necessarily the "hubris" that is driving the "idea that we should be so puffed up as to force other countries to do this or that politically".
Isn't the "hubris" you are talking about more represented by neoconservatism and liberal internationalism, than the "flag-waving, constantly intoning "America is great!" brand of patriotism"?
