I wouldn't think direct connections and isolation would change volume, unless you bypassed actual components along the way. Was there a crossover before? If so, maybe you should consider upgrading the caps, resistors, etc and put it back in the line.

Two other options would be replace volume control with one that would give you more control, or install a resistor in front or after volume control.
There are people here [maybe better to post in the diy Tweaker Asylum] if given specs on current volume control, they can recommend what size, type, and brand of resistors you would need. Also the best place to put them.
Tuning dots won't give you any more control over the volume. Room accoustics should be addressed as a part of optimizing any decent system. But I believe it is a separate project, in this case.
