Re: Beauhorn Virtuoso Ref.

Jeffrey, I think people have been bending over backwards and giving you every benefit of the doubt to create a plausible context for what you heard with the Avantgardes--e.g., by suggesting the Avantgardes you heard weren’t set up properly or perhaps driven by poor electronics. I happen to think the “finicky” nature of Avantgardes has if anything been overstated. I’m no setup genius, but I got them to sound pretty good right out of the box, and this is in fact one of their explicit design objectives—to provide a high proportion of direct to reflected sound, thereby reducing the importance of room reflections. Another point along these lines is that in the German showrooms they actually use pretty humble electronics (integrated amps by Audio Refinement and Electrocompaniet, last I heard) to drive the UNOs and DUOs, just to show that you don’t need to use state-of-the-art equipment to get good sound from them.

The other approach to understanding your strongly negative comparative claim, of course, is to examine the setup of your Beauhorns. Already, you’ve been asked twice to describe your ancillary equipment, and for some reason you refuse to respond. What is this, some kind of state secret? You seem comfortable describing speakers that you are (and aren’t) so familiar with, yet you say you don’t want to get into a “pissing contest” about who’s got the best equipment. Well, honestly, there’s so much urine under the bridge at this point, why not come clean and tell us what you’re using? I’m sure Beauhorns sound very different with different amplifiers, so how can any of your comments be regarded as meaningful if you don’t describe them in a system context?

["I bought a pair of Avantgarde Trios and changed my mind the day I was to take delivery."]

Up to this point, I thought the U.S. Avantgarde distributor had been exercising commendable restraint in this discussion; now I see it’s been more like heroic restraint.
