About intermodulation, check out Matts post about hetrodyning. Also of interest is Paul's reply, because he is a well-respected musician that frequents the forum and that has an excellent understanding of acoustics. The reason I refer to thread is that while multi-amping and band-splitting and things like this help, one still finds the issues occur within a subsystem - whether it be woofer, midrange or tweeter - and even outside the subsystem, holistically as an entire system. In this case, the modulation is between two separate acoustic sound sources.
