You are certainly right. I did not have measurement equipment at the time and have not enough interest left in the Altecs to measure mine now. From what I remember, the 299 may be lower at 8k but I suspect they have a higher output above 10 or 12k, up to maybe 15k (although very irregular).
In any case I completely agree with your preference for the 288. I like other drivers better though.
Having never listened to 288Gs, I would appreciate your comments on how they sound (and measure) compared to later Altec units (or, say, TAD 4002s or 4003s, I have little experience in the JBLs). I have always been tempted to acquire a pair of them.
