I have both though the plasma resides in the bedroom and the projector in a pubic area. The plasma is used for most casual and TV viewing with exceptions (The Super Bowl, occasional HDTV broadcasts that seem appropriate to a full blown setup). The projector is used for film. Abviously the projector is also used for company.
They are different experiences for me but for film I far prefer the projector. TV directors/editors often cut so rapidly that one goes bonkers with a large (100" or larger) image so I am generally more comfortable with the smaller image in TV.
