Some of the Sonys have 60sec flash rewind. But other than that, you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference. If you're concerned about VHS quality, and you have 100's of tapes you don't want to have to re-buy in DVD, you might spring for one of the JVC SVHS units. The discontinued 9600 series or one of the pro decks built on the same platform. Except to pay $500 (+/-$250). :-( Depends on what it is worth to you.... For most, it isn't. :-/

FYI - the later models 9700, 9800, 9900, etc are a notch down in build quality. not sure of playback suffers (I'm assuing it does).
