Oppo 205 scuppered my plans...

Posted by Jim Pearce on May 30, 2017 at 08:55:42:

I knew I'd have to replace my Pioneer Elite Pro-1000HD sooner rather than later, but on the eve of completing its 14th year of service the plasma panel is going, so I'm getting a new 55" LG C7 OLED next Friday. Not that I'm in a hurry to play 4K discs, but I planned to upgrade my Oppo BDP-95 to a UDP-205 and add a Bryston bda-3 DAC ($3200 Canadian) for stereo into the largely unused xlr inputs of my venerable Anthem AVM 20. (That's right - I'm still wholly dependent on analog outputs).

The problem of course is that the UDP-205 doesn't support HDCD nor does the bda-3, and I have a ton of HDCDs. The simplest solution would be to find another DAC which preferably would have:

1. HDMI input and SACD capability
2. xlr output
3. HDCD capability

Unfortunately, right now there is no such animal. The closest thing would be a NAD M51 - would require conversion of the SACD to PCM - and from reviews I'm not sure it would even be an improvement over an Oppo for 2 channel.

Right now my instinct is to go ahead with the BDP-95/Bryston combo and add a different UHD player when I upgrade the pre-pro, likely to a Marantz 8803 (?) or Emotiva XMC-2 (?).

Any thoughts? For instance a killer HDCD DAC with xlr outs that would mate well with an Oppo UDP-205?
